If you’re looking to enjoy shopping, music, art, and nightlife in Dallas, the Deep Ellum area is the place to be! With live music venues, murals scattered throughout the streets, and plenty of unique shops and restaurants, the whole area feels like a giant gallery, making it fun to stroll around. This time, I had a fantastic day exploring with my friend D, who was born and raised in Dallas, and thanks to D’s guidance, I discovered so many new things. Big thanks to my friend D!
The Joy of Street Art and Strolling
All around Deep Ellum, you’ll find hip murals everywhere! The easily accessible street art adds to the lively vibe, making it feel like you’re walking through an open-air gallery. The art ranges from pieces filled with humor to tattoo-inspired designs. There’s even a street named after Malcolm X, the civil rights leader, which adds cultural depth to the area. This neighborhood also has many live music venues and clubs, making it a hub of creativity and nightlife.
Shopping Spot Tour
At the spice shop “1890 Marketplace,” the wide variety of olive oils and spices is truly impressive! You can freely sample their handcrafted spice blends, fresh olive oils, and balsamic vinegars. They even offer samples of recommended recipes, like dipping bread into Garlic Infused Olive Oil and Mediterranean Spice Blend (on the left) and savoring popcorn seasoned with Butter Infused Olive Oil and Truffle, Parmesan & Black Garlic Seasoning (on the right). Everything was delicious, and the popcorn seasoning was especially outstanding!
Don’t miss the aromatic candle shop, “Proper Wax,” where you’ll find unique products like candles that look just like Nike shoes! Another must-visit is the “Jade and Clover” plant shop filled with adorable plants and interior decor items. It’s a fun and relaxing spot, even if you’re browsing.
A Hidden Gem for Sushi Lovers – Nori Handroll Bar
When it comes to Deep Ellum, the Texas-style BBQ at “Pecan Lodge” is a must-try. It’s so popular that there’s often a line on weekends, but it tends to be less crowded during weekday afternoons.
A Lucky Lunch Find!! My friend and I stumbled upon the “Nori Handroll Bar” for lunch, and it was a fantastic surprise! Crispy seaweed, fresh ingredients, and perfectly seasoned rice made each hand roll incredibly delicious. The menu was also fun, with course names like “I Could Eat,” “Hungry,” and “Starving.” I went with the “Starving” option, enjoying five hand rolls. We were lucky to get in for lunch, as it’s the kind of sushi place bound to be popular at night.
Diverse Shops and Nightlife
Deep Ellum is also dotted with unique shops, from quirky boutiques and stationery and interior shops to select apparel stores, vintage clothing shops, art galleries, cafes, and restaurants. Known for its vibrant nightlife, Deep Ellum is actually a hidden gem during weekday afternoons when it’s much quieter. That said, next time, I’d love to experience the area’s lively night vibe with live music and clubs!
Deep Ellum isn’t just for sightseeing; it’s an area where you can enjoy art, shopping, and gourmet delights. If you’re visiting Dallas, it’s worth making a trip here—especially if you love art, as there’s so much to enjoy!
