Capilano Suspension Bridge
When visiting Vancouver, a must-see spot is the Capilano Suspension Bridge. It’s a popular tourist destination where you can enjoy both thrilling experiences and stunning natural beauty all at once! The suspension bridge spans 137 meters above the Capilano River, and crossing it with its gentle swaying is an exhilarating experience. From the bridge, you’re treated to breathtaking views of the expansive forest below, making you feel as though you’re strolling right through the heart of the woods.
Access is convenient, with a free shuttle bus running from Canada Place, located on the waterfront in downtown Vancouver, to the Capilano Suspension Bridge. The shuttle takes about 20-30 minutes to reach the bridge, but since it tends to sway more as it gets crowded, it’s best to arrive early.
Canada Place is also a popular tourist destination, especially known for its building featuring a series of white sails, which has become a landmark of Vancouver. It houses a cruise terminal, the Vancouver Convention Centre, and the five-star Fairmont Waterfront hotel, and serves as a venue for many events and festivals.
Ticket Information and Best Ways to Purchase
Discount coupons provided at hotels can only be used for purchases at the entrance, which requires waiting in line after arrival. Although discount coupons cannot be applied when purchasing tickets online from the official website, it was convenient to enter immediately upon arrival. Since lines can build up at the ticket counter at the entrance, buying tickets online in advance is a smoother option. Tickets are also sold at the shop near the shuttle stop at Canada Place, but they are inexplicably more expensive there, and the discount coupons are not accepted, making online pre-purchase likely the most cost-effective choice.
History and Features of the Suspension Bridge
The name ‘Capilano’ is derived from Ki-ap-i-lan-o, a chief of the Squamish Nation, the indigenous people of the region. The suspension bridge was originally built in 1889 by Scottish civil engineer George Grant Mackay. Initially constructed with hemp ropes and cedar planks, it was later rebuilt in 1956 using steel cables and wooden planks, significantly enhancing its safety and durability.
At 137 meters, it’s impressively long! And it sways more than expected! 70 meters below, the Capilano River flows. The breathtaking views of the vast natural surroundings from the suspension bridge are truly spectacular!
The Suspension Bridge and Surrounding Attractions
The Living Forest
On the other side of the Capilano Suspension Bridge, you’ll find a walkway called ‘The Living Forest,’ where you can stroll through the forest. Designed to blend in with nature, it feels lovely to take a leisurely walk through the trees. Around the pond, light balls are beautifully arranged, creating what promises to be a magical view when illuminated at night.
Cliffwalk
The Cliffwalk, a pathway along the cliffs above the Capilano River, is also a must-see. Unlike the suspension bridge, it doesn’t sway, but it’s still thrilling! You can see the walkway suspended by wires, and personally, I found it even scarier than the bridge.
Even so, the views of the Capilano River and waterfalls from the Cliffwalk are absolutely stunning! You can fully immerse yourself in the beauty of nature.
Treetops Adventure
Treetops Adventure is an attraction featuring small suspension bridges that allow you to enjoy forest views from approximately 30 meters above the ground. The design is carefully crafted to avoid strain on the trees, harmonizing with the natural environment. It gives you the feeling of blending seamlessly into the surrounding nature. Refresh your mind and body with the fresh forest air!
Other Facilities and Highlights
The suspension bridge area is well-equipped with rest areas, cafes, and souvenir shops, allowing you to enjoy your visit all day. In winter, the ‘Canyon Lights’ event illuminates the bridge and trees with thousands of lights, making it a beloved winter tradition in Vancouver. I visited in spring, and the fresh greenery was absolutely beautiful. It seems you can enjoy different seasonal beauty throughout the year.
Due to its stunning scenery, the Capilano Suspension Bridge is often used as a filming location for movies and TV shows. At this spot where you can experience thrills and immerse yourself in nature, why not enjoy a refreshing moment of ‘forest bathing’ to revitalize both body and mind?
*Bonus: Stanley Park
The return shuttle offers convenient drop-offs along the route if you let the driver know where you’d like to get off. A stop at Stanley Park along the way is highly recommended. There, you’ll be greeted with postcard-perfect scenery and breathtakingly beautiful views.
Within the park, there is a pathway and cycling road along the coastline called the Seawall, making it an ideal spot to enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings fully!
